Summer Activities for Older Adults

Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Vancouver. There is no end to the activities that one can enjoy during these warmer months, but as we age we may feel limited by health challenges and reduced mobility. This does not mean your time outside is limited to sitting in the shade watching everyone else have fun. Here are a few ways to occupy yourself during these summer months.

Enjoy the Water

Vancouver is home to beautiful beaches and pools, and is in proximity to lakes and ponds that can provide a great deal of cooling relief on hot summer days. They can also be the location of many enjoyable activities that will help you enjoy the sun and the water with your friends and family.

Swimming is a classic summer activity but don’t forget water aerobics, kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding, all of which can help you stay physically and mentally fit. Swimming and water aerobics are great ways to enjoy the sensation of cool water flowing over your skin while getting exercise in a near-weightless environment, which reduces pressure on bones and joints while still allowing you to enjoy the benefits of exercise.

Hit the Fishing Hole

Fishing is not known for being a highly physical activity, which is great when you have a hard time getting around or simply want to have a relaxing, easy day. As you get more into the sport, you can learn a lot about the types of fish in local ponds and lakes and how to best catch them. This can help with mental acuity and focus in a fun and relaxing way.

Enjoy a Game

Take time this summer to attend a sporting event, such as a baseball game or a tennis match. Hear the crowds roar as you sip on beer or lemonade and nosh on hot dogs with friends and family members. It’s such a quintessentially summer activity!
