Here at Opal by Element, we like to keep things fresh and interesting, and that extends to our workout classes! Not only is dance a fun and energizing way to break a sweat, but studies have shown that making dance a part of a regular workout regimen can help older adults maintain balance and coordination, in turn reducing their risk for falls. That’s why we’re kicking off the fall season with a Zumba dance class session.
Not your average exercise class, Zumba takes the fun and saucy movements that form the basis of the Latin ballroom dances that have become so popular in North America in recent years – salsa, mambo, merengue and samba – and weaves them into a one-hour workout!
What sets Zumba apart from other exercise classes such as kickboxing and yoga is that there’s no pressure to be super coordinated and to keep up with specific movements; all the steps are free flowing! Not only does this mean you can exercise at your own pace and ability, but you’ll also feel more like you’re at a dance party on a beach in Puerto Vallarta than at an aerobics class. Anyone who’s ever cut a rug knows that dance is a great cardio workout, but a 2015 study found that even a toned-down version of Zumba is excellent for maintaining cardiovascular fitness in older adults.
